But when it comes to Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and especially building backlinks to my clients’ websites I consider myself one of the best you will ever find. Since building my first website way back in 2005, I have learned a ton about how to do this and I am happy to use my talents to help you get a ton of website traffic (assuming there is a good fit).

Why Link Building?

Linkbuilding for SEO has a bad reputation.

It’s no mystery why: for years Black hat Search Engine Optimizers used unnatural linkbuilding techniques.

Then Google caught on. They updated their algorithm a few times. Sites with unnatural link profiles lost their traffic. But that doesn’t change the fact that Link building is still the #1 factor Google uses to determine your ranking.

Link building is still the most powerful and productive way to grow your site’s traffic. If you want more traffic you need a linkbuilding strategy. But you have to do it the right way.

How I build links to Your Site

Here are the seven steps I take on every link building campaign. You can do this yourself. Or hire me to do it for you!

Step 1: We’ll get to know each other a little bit

I’ll want to get to know you a little bit. I’ll want to learn some basic things about you and your website. For example:

  • Who is your target audience and what do you know about them?
  • What keywords would you most like to rank for?
  • What are your linkbuilding and search traffic goals for the next quarter and year?
  • What have you done for SEO and Linkbuilding up to now?

I’ll also explain to you some of my expectations and how I do things on my end.

Step 2: Site and Content Audit

I’ll do some work to find out what is on your site. What can you improve?

I will review your site’s existing content to see if it can be used for our linkbuilding efforts. You may have a ton of hidden gems that we can use to get you great backllinks. Or I may make suggestions on how you can punch up existing content.

I’ll send you some reports that you can use to improve your site. If your content is less than ideal for link building we have two options:

1. You or someone on your team can create the content pieces that I recommend, or

2. I can create the content for you. (This will be an additional expense, but may be the easiest way for both of us).

Step 3: Niche and Competitor Analysis

Before we invest your money and my time into this SEO campaign, we will want to get an idea of what the landscape is for SEO in your niche. We’ll want to figure out what can be achieved in your market, and how tough the competition is.

A good SEO competitor analysis will help us determine what will and won’t work for your industry. It will give us an idea of what your competitors strengths and weaknesses are so we can replicate and capitalize on them.

I will identify your competitors, analyze their backlink sources, and find out which keywords are sending them the most traffic. I’ll put this into a report in a google sheet that we will refer back to as we run your linkbuilding campaigns.

Here’s what that will kind of look like:

Step 4: Keyword Research

Keyword research really isn’t as complicated as some people try to make it. Here are the steps I take to find high traffic keywords that you can realistically rank for quickly:

1. Create a list of 3-10 umbrella keyword topics areas

You should be able to think this up pretty quickly. Just ask yourself: What niche is your website in? What is your website about? What do you want to be known for/as an expert in?

For example: For a site I’m building in the sailing niche I want to rank for terms related to “sailing,” “learning to sail,” and “sailboat racing.”

2. Use Ahrefs.com to find keywords related to these topic areas

For each of the keyword topic areas we are going to put them into Ahrefs keyword tool and find related Keywords that we might want to target for your sight.

We’ll pull the best keywords and add them to a target list

Then I’ll add in the keywords your competitors are ranking for.

To do this we’ll use ahrefs site explorer. You enter your top competitor’s URL. Then you look for keywords that you may be able to out rank your competitor for.

Step 5. Link building strategy development

  1. Compile a list of prospects

I will then use the information I’ve gathered in the above steps to begin developing a Link building strategy for your site.

This will be a continually changing document that you will be able to keep track of in real time (see project management and reporting section below)

2. Choose what types of links to target

There a dozens of link types that I can get for your site. These include:  Guest posts, Resource Pages, Video Links, and at least 20 others.

I will analyze the data we have and make a judgment about what kinds of links will be the most beneficial to go after for you site.

3. Find the contact details

I will find the names and emails of the people I will be contacting to request a link to your site.

I will use tools like emailfinder.io, Linkedin Premium, and a few other tools to find the best contact information for our link prospects. With this we are ready to start making contact and asking for links.

Step 6. Manual Link Outreach

Most outreach companies will simply send the same canned message to hundreds of prospects and hope for a response. I do things a little differently

I only approach those people who would most likely appreciate the content we will be sending them. You won’t just be building links here. We will be building relationships with other site owners in your field.

Here are the steps I take:

1. Email prospects in small batches (25 or less at a time).

2. Track open rates, response rates, and click rates if there is a link

3. Use the results to improve the email for other batches

4. Send 1-2 follow up emails

5. Track everything in the reporting document

The success to this process usually comes in the followup. I have found that 70-90% of my links come in the 2nd or 3rd email followup.

Step 7. Project management and reporting

I will be tracking all of this in a reporting document as I go. This document will be updated in real time and you will be able to access this to check my progress whenever you want.

You will be able to see everything that will be done during the campaign. This is broken down into individual action steps that will be update in real time as “assigned,” “doing” and “done”
